Liz Kregloe: The Power of Reiki and My Artwork
Reiki changed my life by healing the artist’s block that haunted me for ten years. The healing took place in just a few short months, and in such a way that my former strengths and interests were perfectly fitted to the new work.
I have lived the life of an artist since my early 20’s. At that time I was a weaver and spinner showing my wares at craft shows and local galleries. Soon our small tract home was too small for three looms, a spinning wheel, and a dye pot. A move to a studio space was necessary and welcome. It was a thrill to have my own work space. It was at about that time I began working in handmade paper and collage. The success of this new medium caused me to leave the weaving and craft fairs behind.
After a few years I moved to Roanoke, VA to work as Director of Education for the small art museum there. My art continued to flourish and began selling through art consultants and in galleries in major eastern cities. I was encouraged to get my master’s degree in art. I chose a double major of studio art and art history as I had done in undergraduate school. I attempted some large scale commission works for corporate client. They were successful, and was asked to teach art and design at the local community college.
I continued to show and sell my art in the mid-Atlantic region for nearly 20 years. After setting a goal of making three large commissioned pieces in one year (and achieving it in 1 ½ years) my ability to make art suddenly dried up. I was very sad.
Upon the suggestion of a friend, I took Lynn Boggess’ Reiki I course at the Virginia Center for Reiki Training in November, 2009. Lynn had some beautiful local crafts for sale at the center. She suggested I might like to make some things for sale. My response was enthusiastic and positive.
As I began to work again, this time I used the Reiki energy. Upon entering my studio I practice drawing the Reiki II symbols with pen and paper before beginning my work. The images of sacred space that I had researched for my master’s thesis and used in a successful sacred space series in the 90’sare the underpinning for the Reiki collages. I also use some simple book construction techniques that I taught in my college design classes to make journals and boxes bearing the Reiki symbol. I have never been as happy in my work as I am now.
My Reiki practice inspires my creativity. I am working again at full capacity. Reiki’s spiritually guided life force energy keeps me working without the stress of former times. Most importantly, Reiki energy has healed my artist’s block. It is with deep gratitude that I offer my collages and crafts items to you.
